Tyndall SW face?

by calipidder » Sat Feb 23, 2013 12:44 am

I'll be out in Wright Lakes Basin this summer and want to do Tyndall from there. Beta on the southwest face is a bit thin but appears to be an easier but sloggier approach than the north rib. I'm thinking of doing a loop day hike that would take us out of our camp in Wright Lakes Basin and over Rockwell Pass to the classic North Rib route, then plunge step our way down the SW face back to camp. Feasible? Has anyone done the SW face and have good pics? If the route is good we could just go up and down that way too, but I'd rather have solid rock than a sloggity slog up.

Do the north rib. All sorts of fun. I like your roundabout day-hike idea, Bex!!

I agree with MooseTracks... that would be a fun loop. :)

Southwest slope is a good descent option but a really, really boring climb - nothing but scree and talus. North ridge is a lot more fun. On the plus side, the scenery to the south and west of the Tyndall-Versteeg crest is much more lush and beautiful than the wasteland to the north and east. The unnamed lake south of Tyndall is a gem.
