Weather in Mid September

by mountainmanjohn » Wed Jun 27, 2012 4:53 am

Was planning a weeks climbing in Mid September. Had hoped to go to Bernese Oberland for Fiescherhorn or similar.
Is this a good time to go? Is it a little late in the season? I usually go July or August.

Many thanks

Hey John, September is about the best time for the Alps you can find. Crowds are gone and the weather is usually much more stable than anytime else during the year. Admittedly I'm rarely going to the western Alps (but always in September) but from what I've seen from the weather forecasts during my stays weather patterns are much more stable anywhere. Often weatther holds through the first weeks of October.

However, you'll have to account for shorter and colder days so there's less time left for any climb / hike.

Thanks for that. Ive had all sorts of weather, in June July August and Sept. I know its never guarenteed!.......but thats a helpful reply thanks. I did go once in the beginning of October. It was like you said, colder but Glorious weather and I bumped into the team filming some Touching the Void scenes at the Monch Hut.
