This is a weird little park where I've been a couple of times (but not in some years). I once hiked to the bottom. This canyon actually started as erosion from lousy farming practices in the relatively recent past. All clay. No rock to speak of, at all.
Good observation, I should have been more concise in my write-up. The spires are all clay. Erosion is still taking its toll on them, and it is only a matter of time before some of the taller ones eventually collapse.
