JiriKadlecfrom Provo to Provo peak  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 2, 2014
I woke up early morning and started the long hike via the Y mountain trailhead. Saw two big deer on the trail and refilled water in a little spring up in the saddle. Like a few other posters here, after crossing Squaw Peak road, I followed the ATV trail for too long and then almost got lost in the thick dense bushes. Finally reached the summit after 7 hours' hike from Provo. The views were spectacular - you could see all the way to the Great Salt Lake and the Uintas - and there were 5 other climbers and many more butterflies. It was nice to see the BYU SWKT tower and the "Y" mountain so deep below. The descent back to Provo took 4 hours and I walked back through the first right fork trail and Rock canyon. There were delicious berries on the trail.

Rocky Alps

Made the short but steep hike up to the top of Provo Peak, and then continued on to East Provo Peak with David. We started out descending the southeast slopes and then traversing over to the ridge between the two peaks, but after encountering some miserably loose shale (honestly, the worst terrain I've ever encountered) we decided to stay on the ridge on the way back, which proved to be much easier. Even on the ridge the rock was a bit loose in places though, so I'd urge caution to whoever tries it. See "Jekyll & Hyde" trip report for details.

I enjoyed this peak. The trail is steep. The scenery is great. We saw a lot of wildflowers. We also did East Provo Peak. I did this hike with Brandon (Rocky Alps).

It is interesting that such a high peak, with significant prominence above a city of over 100,000 people has such a nondescript trail, and few climbers. It really is a gorgeous mountain with gorgeous views. On the fourth of July we had the mountain to ourselves. It is a steep trail however, it opens the lungs for sure! Worth it! Took about an hour and a half from Squaw Peak Road.

Squaw Peak road was washed out so we parked the vehicle and hiked on the road for a while.

Short little climb with enough elevation to keep you on your toes. Started from Rock Canyon TH to stretch the day out a little more. I followed the ATV trail a little too long (like a few before me, you'd think I'd have known better) and ended up on the north side of the ridge, bushwacking up the terracing. Finally worked my way over to the trail and had a lovely climb to the top.

West Ridge route. Didn't have access to a 4x4 so we rode MTBs up the road instead.

Whatever you do, do not attempt a traverse across to East Provo Peak. Unless you really like loose shale, you have a lot of time to kill, you hate fun, and you have a death wish. Gorgeous views from the summit of Provo Peak, though! It's the perfect vantage point from which to admire far lovelier Wasatch peaks. (I'm looking at you, Nebo!)

Walked the road from the gate, then went up the NW ridge and down the W ridge. The snow was nice and hard -- almost too hard for my Kahtoolas. Mini-trip report.

My brother in law just got home from a mission and the other four of us wanted to take him on a hike to celebrate. We were going to go up Timpanogos but found out that the trailhead we were going to use was closed so we decided to hit up Provo Peak instead.

We didn't get to the trailhead until almost 2:30 pm. It took a little driving on the dirt road to make sure we were in the right spot. Once we were sure, off we went. We passed a group of hikers on the way down that said they started at about 8:00 am and reached the summit at noon. At that pace we figured it would be dark by the time we got to the car. Luckily for us we went considerably faster then that and reached the summit in about 2 hours 15 minutes or so. It was starting to rain and dark clouds were moving in from over Utah lake so we didn't get to stay on the summit as long as we wanted but it was a great day and a fun hike. A couple of us made the return trip to the car in just over an hour and waited another hour or so for the rest of them. Great hike, although it was a little steep in parts.

Make sure to look out for the yellow caution tape and take the small trail to the right rather then continuing on the ATV trail. There is also an arrow made of rocks pointing the way to go. Pay attention so you do not have to backtrack.

Took 1 hour flat from the road. I followed the ATV trail too far, so I had to bushwhack for a bit. The trail was much better than what I was expecting. Beautiful views.

This is my second time hiking this peak. It appeared to be a nice day but it got windier and colder the higher we went. We had thought to head over to East Provo Peak but I was too nervous as we started down. It felt like I was gonna blow off the side of the mountain and I couldn't feel my fingers anymore. It was a good hike once I warmed up.

Went to the top with Brita...took about an hour and 20 minutes. It was ridiculously cold and windy on the summit. We wanted to go to East Provo Peak but it was so windy that it became dangerous and so cold that it was a problem so we turned back. We ran pretty much the whole way down and drove back down Hobble Creek Canyon (we came up from Provo Canyon).

Broke trail in upside-down snow from the campground on. Got pretty bad on the lover parts of the west ridge, but mellowed into wind slabs and wind swept rock higher up on the ridge. Looong day that dashed our hopes of also tagging East Provo Peak. Gorgious views.

I tired to climb Provo Peak twice when I was 18, and failed both times because we got off route and couldn't navigate very well. The second attempt was in the winter and was my first true mountaineering experience. We cut a tent platform into a steep snow slope and staked the tiny tent down with ice axes and snowshoes. Someday I would like to go back and actually get to the summit.
