I think the Traverse definitely deserves its own page... it's a major mountaineering objective in itself! Nicely done, and laid out.

Spectacular area!- lots of galciers. Your page is top notch. Is it tough to get consistent clear days in that region?

It's not unheard-of to get a week or two of near-perfect weather in August. Unless you've been planning since Spring to spend that particular time on an extended trek... so you carry full storm gear and a full bottle of sunscreen and see what happens.

Eric, great idea to pick this up. There is a place here for traverses, enchainments, etc. Thanks for leading the way. I hope to add some pics and comments soon.

Nice page! In the new version of Summitpost (Spv2) there will be room for 'non-mountain' pages, so even the fact that it's not a mountain won't be a problem anymore.

Cheers,

Rick

nice!

Great page! I have been jonesing to do this trip for years...seeing this page only fans the flames!

Now that SPv2 is out, I suggest changing the page type to "Route". Also, drop the Preamble "Apology" section - This page certainly has a place on SP (especially V2.)

Re: nice!

Thanks! I still have one short stage to add, then I'll back up and re-examine the arrangement. I'll at least move that table of peaks into the PT Range/Area page, but I haven't thought of a graceful way to convert the Peak page into a Route. I like having all the stages as "child" routes, and the main Peak page points to so many mountains that don't have pages, yet.
The Stages can be linked as child routes to the various peaks along the way, but I don't think routes can have other routes as children or parents. I think I know how to make the Ptarmigan show up in queries of Routes; I'll try it tomorow. Linking to the Cascade Pass and Downey Creek trailheads will help, too. I'm open to advice, but be patient with me, because I don't get the time to work on this much. Thanks.

"P" as Ptarmigan

When the operator on the phone asks you to spell a word, remember to use the helpful phrases:

"P" as in ptarmigan
"M" as in mnemonic

Good tip.

Thanks for the valuable advice. I once tried to compose a story entirely out of words beginning with silent letters, but I ruined 3 monitors trying to write with a knife.

It really is a big fun trip, great country, lots of climbs, views everywhere, ourstanding camps up high, lovely lakes. We had a super wet passage out from Cub Lake that I can still feel in my bones, but worth every step!

Route Information

Greetings...

I realize this thread hasn't been active since 2008. But, hey, there didn't seem to be any other place to post a question re: the Ptarmigan Traverse.

So I created a GPS route with ~125 waypoints of the PT starting at Cascade Pass and ending at Downey Creek. I was wondering if anyone that has actually gone over the PT would be intersted in taking a look at it and seeing if there are any places where I could improve my route. Thanks.

I created a file *.gpx file (it's a standard GPS route/track file). Drag and drop the file into Google Earth. It'll show up on the map screen. Here's a link to the file:

https://publish.comcast.net/modal_windows/file_details/_D3lb5WiGzTkaabnZRRE1xTarCRp3D39oP_x1TGdylibeX-UKGyFvbo0SNzE_DaWd2C_qlfOJjiM4Ttj3KSMWdM1ejlHrAK6tzgeLTqdDXJt2qTlQRYutUUkgThGXchg,Ptarmagin%20Traverse%20Complete.gpx,other,120105,1286176820,Unknown,Yes,all/

Click download, save, then drag and drop into Google Earth. The route will be superimposed on "Earth".

I created another file, a Google Earth "Tour" file. Here is a link to that file:

https://publish.comcast.net/modal_windows/file_details/DEOQBb1KZsJ5m_LFwBb_7lIUh_2jpRTizCtZj5GGTAK3JciXh3dbUinMNLiCgNFwcaxDZ-PDWk1IkSkR_Pvj7fI7_gNrjxnlTIXlSeyMXyd4WugrDVCyqanIc34zZ9XQ,Ptarmigan%20Traverse%20Tour.kmz,other,6510,1286176667,Unknown,Yes,all/

Again, click download, save the file, then drag and drop the file into Google Earth. A "Tour" file will "fly" you along the route in Google Earth.

If anyone could provide feedback that would be cool.

Thanks.

Re: Route Information

Thanks, Sam, for what I think will be nice additions to the page. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be available to me until I sign in as a Comcast subscriber, which I'm not. (I copied the addresses into the address bars of new tabs on Firefox 3.6 and found myself at the sign-in page for Comcast.net.) If you can publish them where they'll be available to all of us, I'll link to them on the main page, with credit to you as the creator. Doesn't Google Earth have a community forum where you can publish routes and tours?

Route Information

Eric,

I think I figured all this out...

These links should work. If you double click on the link, it will open in a browser window. Right Click in the browser and click "save as". Alternatively, right click on the link and click "save as".

GPS Route File

and

Google Earth Tour File

It would be cool to see this on your page. But more importantly, I'd like to get feedback as to the accuracy of my route from people that have actually treked the entire route.

Thanks,

Later,

Sam

I can access them now; when I'm home I'll try them out and link to them.

Wolverine on the Ptarmigan Traverse

Several groups reported seeing a wolverine on and near the Ptarmigan Traverse during summer of 2020. This could be a special bonus for those doing the Traverse. Or, it possibly could be a problem for humans and for the wolverine. So far, the wolverine appears interested in avoiding humans, but a wolverine that regularly travels the Traverse may be more tolerant of humans than your typical wolverine. If the wolverine discovers the delights of human food stuffs, that could be bad for us (imagine climbing a peak and returning to a trashed and raided camp), and it could be disastrous for the wolverine. Thus, food-storage precautions might be warranted (easier said than done).

Here is a video of said wolverine, taken from near Itswoot Ridge:
