Route Description

The trail is 3.4 miles to the base of the rock. From there is it a short scramble (1/4 of a mile or so). The first section of the trail climbs somewhat steeply through forest. There is a nice viewpoint of 3 Cascade peaks after a mile or a mile and a half. Then the trail flattens out and skirts the east side of Bird Mountain with nice views of it's rocky cliffs. After 2.2 miles total you come to Cultus Lake and some neat meadows (mind the bugs). The trail "T"s and you want to take the left fork which shortly winds around to views of Lemei Rock.

After a mile or so from the junction, you will come to a point where there is a small clearing and the northwest ridge of Lemei is evident. From here, if you want to scramble up the ridge through some forest, cross the small stream and climb a reddish scree field to gain the ridge. It's short but steep. A faint "path" meanders up the ridge staying pretty close to the edge. When you reach a small rockface about 15 feet high you can either do some easy 5th class climbing over it or skirt it on the right side and do some 3rd or easy 4th class moves to gain the summit ridge. From here, scramble along the ridge south to the summit. Again, a faint "path" can be seen and followed.

If you continue on another .2 miles from the point where you left the path you will come around the rock to east side of Lemei Rock. A snowfield lingers here at least into August if not year round. Climb scree or cross the snow to the base of the highest rock pinnacle and follow it around to the right to climb third class rock and boulders up the short gully to a notch just to the right of the summit. Easy scramble up top to the true summit.

Essential Gear

Bug spray.
