Kialv2Vivian Snow  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Feb 23, 2006

2nd time on this peak, first time in the winter. We camped one night at hi-creek, and woke up early to make the summit. It was really windy, there were little "snow tornados" everywhere, but it was an absolutely breathtaking winter wonderland experience.

Glorious day! Views were in excess of 75 miles in all directions. Have never seen Baldy so clear in the summer. Still good water flow at High and Halfway Camps. 5 hours up, about 3h 45m down. Great, rugged (in spots!) trail hike. As far as mileage...have to agree with Gary Suttle's book.

Smith938000 Meter Challenge  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 7, 2006

The second peak of the 8000 Meter Challenge. It started out very hot but the higher I climbed the cooler it got. I had beautiful views from the top, I could see Mt. Baldy but San Jacinto had clouds arround it. I began hiking to the top at 10:15am and got back to my car at 6:00pm, my feet were very sore by this point but I still had to go climb San Jacinto.

Food poisoning the day before; late start--had to get the permit; TONS of mosquitos; lots of people and Boy Scouts on the Vivian trail, so took a different way down and got lost. For 13 miles I saw NO ONE. Finally bushwhacked down to the river and was stung by bee--all for a beautiful view from the highest peak between the Sierras and Mexico.

Date Climbed: Aug 10, 2006

Camped at high creek, left camp at 4am and summited at 745am! The view was even more amazing than I was anticipating. We were alone on the summit to enjoy the moment.

UPDATED- 5-24-08 Myself and 3 friends climbed the Middle east chute on the North Face for some spring skiing. Climbing up the face with 35+ lbs of ski shit was tough, but happy to get the North Face done!

I don't remember how many times I've been to the top of San G. Great peak, but I've never had very good summit views.

Spectacular view of San Jacinto along the Sky High Trail section, but haze obscured all but the summit of Old Baldy and practically everything else. This hike took longer than expected (14 hours) so I probably wasn't in shape for it.

I hiked up with friend Trayce S. and we then skied/snowboard 1/2 down. Tough going up without crampons. Making it for a long day.
Great skiing down to the bent tree.

Date Climbed: Jul 8, 2006

Went up from Fish Creek. Not a huge gainer (3400') but a distance killer; about 22 miles round-trip. The incline of the trail is too moderate in my opinion; climb up a ridge as soon as you get a chance; it will shave off lots of distance! Other than that, a beautiful side of the wilderness. Go up early; thunderstorms tend to develop late morning.

San Gorgonio was the first peak on my 26-mile trek across the San Bernadino mtns on Sat, July 1, 2006. I went from Vivian Creek TH to San G, then from San G across to San Bernadino, then from San B to Angelus Oaks TH, then I biked back to the Vivian Creek TH. 36 mile day: 8 miles up, 10 miles across, 8 miles down, 10 miles biking.

I did this 36-mile hiking/biking circuit in 2003 also. In 2003, I actually bagged all 9 peaks. Today, I was only concerned about hiking 26-miles in thin air and only bagged three (San G, San B East, San B). Great day. You can read my trip report about the bear on the trail.

Clear early morning with thunderheads in from the desert in the early afternoon. A bit of a hot muggy day so views of San Jacinto and the valley not the best. Trail is clear of snow to the summit with the water running well in Vivian creek.
