Set up for soloing

Set up for soloing

This photo was taken inside the New Funtier, and it shows my set up for solo rope ice climbing. There are several different ways to do it. I use both waist and chest harness with attached Ushba ascender, and after setting up a top anchor I rappel down. I am using Ushba ascender to catch me if I take a fall with a few back up knots.

Full-on!

Heavy-duty set-up! Looks like a great way to run laps! I have a few friends who put in much more time than I do soloing stuff; I've heard of using a Mini-Traxion as a popular method, but I've also heard of many using a back-up of sorts (the times I've done it, I usually just use a Gri Gri, but it's a pain-in-the-ass to feed). Does your belay/solo device rely on teeth or a camming unit? How much does a dedicated upper body harness run?

I'm missing the ice at Ouray looking at your photos... Enjoy climbing there (& the Ice Fest if you haven't been!).

Re: Full-on!

Yes, heavy duty. Ushba is probably the most popular device in the ice park. Super easy for top roping and running laps, and it does feed well (especially if you have a long rope or a backpack hanging at its end). Chest harness - just feels more secure to me, but you don't need one for using Ushba. I have not tried other devices.
