Is this glacial runoff?

The color is so cool! Wish I were there right now!

Re: Is this glacial runoff?

No, there are no more glaciers in Julian Alps. I think Soca has its unique colour because of some algae or whatever in limestone. I'm gonna check it right now, if possible. I just know the fact and not the reason :-(

Re: Is this glacial runoff?

No, I was wrong. Soca river does not have its colour because of algae, but because of tiny, invisible particles of chalk (perhaps chalk is not the right word - a sort of soft limestone) in it.

Re: Is this glacial runoff?

Makes sense- the ocean at the Big Sur coastline in places here in California has a similar color because of limestone as well. At any rate, nice shot!

Re: Is this glacial runoff?

As I know the colour is mainly caused by micro-crystals of Calcite (CaCO3) breaking the light.

River Soca is wonderful (just returning from there) and it was time to put some pictures of it on SP!
