Speedy Pronghorn

Speedy Pronghorn

Pronghorns at full speed. Antilocapra americana The Pronghorn is the only living member of its family. It is the fastest land mammal in the world. It can sprint as fast as 60 mph and can sustain a speed of 30 mph for miles! The African Cheetah is often credited with being the fastest, but it is only a sprinter who flags out after a few hundred yards. No other land mammal can keep up with the Pronghorn over a long distance. When they encounter a fence a Pronghorn will usually crawl under it! They seldom jump over one. Pawnee National Grasslands, Colorado.

Awesome shot...

do you know why they are the '2nd' fastest land mammal on earth? Evolution baby... Neogene deposits in Southern Colorado show pronghorn fossils being found with... cheetah fosssils! That's right, the african cousin lived in North America not too long ago, before the last round of ice ages. The pronghorns live on and now the cheetahs are gone.

This picture...

is so underappreciated and it deserves a gold medal in wildlife action shots. I wish I could vote again.

Thanks, Anya. As you know, sometimes you're in the right place at the right time with your camera, and you get lucky.

Seing Them Run ...

Seeing them run is both fascinating and rare; they mostly just stand around whenever I come across them. But capturing them running in a photo? Wonderful! --mark d.

Re: Seing Them Run ...

Thanks, Mark ... they're so fast I had to pan the camera with them ... that's why the background is a little blurred.

Sorry I didn't see

this sooner, Jim. Beautiful animals!
Don't quote me, but I believe they're
extending their range into northern UT.

Re: Sorry I did see

Thanks. They've been there for quite awhile. I've seen them in several different locations throughout Utah.
