Spring is a good time to find...

Spring is a good time to find bear cubs (and there seems to be a population boom this year). Just don't get this close when Mommy's around! The only species of bear in the Whites is the Black Bear, ursus americanus Photo taken using built-in automatic flash on my Powershot s100, digitally brightened in GIMP with a contrast-mask technique. I reduced green-eye by darkening one pixel. June 23, 2005

This was just a cub - about the length of a German Shepard. It was browsing beside the highway and didn't seem to mind flash bulbs at all.

I did see an adult a few days later, drinking at a trailside stream on Mt Chocorua, but it sped away before I even got a good look. That one was so big that it took me a while to decide that I hadn't seen a moose.
