There were hundreds of these things on the mountain. They were similar to cones but looked more like berries up close. Shenandoah N.P. VA-- November 2008

Second the Sumac guess. This baby ain't very tall, and the seed clusters are just smaller than palm-sized, right?

Almost look like

a "gathering" of Lady Bugs, without the black
dots on them. Did you squeeze one of them???
