A tortoise

Actually terrapins are fresh and brackish water swamp turtles that are native to the eastern and southern U S.
I use to catch and collect them when I was a kid in Florida.

I'd thought terrapin and tortoise were interchangeable, but you're right, and this is a desert tortoise. My play on Dead lyrics is scientifically incorrect. :)
