Yeah, the adelgid is rushing through our southern forests. It's weird how it has moved in a kind of patchwork way. For instance, the hemlocks around Highlands NC are all but extinct--enormous dead hemlocks everywhere you look. But move off a few miles to the north or south and the trees seem to be doing fine. Go a little farther in any direction and you will again find areas devastated by the pest.



If you happen to go just about anywhere in the Virginia highlands, pretty much all of the hemlocks are already dead.

Yes, that entire area is heavy with them. I always enjoy hiking through rhododendron tunnels.
