Subalpine Fir Cones

This subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) was stressed and in pretty rough shape. Putting out a burst of cones is a typical stress response in such cases. The photo was taken on the Nut Basin highpoint near Riggins Idaho, July 2006.
