Approach

From Highway 130 (see Getting There) take an established road north to Sugarloaf, Libby Lake, and Lewis Lake Campgrounds. The turnout is about one mile east of the obvious loop in the road, near Snowy Range Pass. Proceed to Lewis Lake Campground.

Route Description

From Lewis Lake Campground, take the marked trail that goes between Lewis Lake and Libby Lake. The trail continues nearly due-West until it reaches the saddle between Sugarloaf Mountain and Medicine Bow Peak. From here, break from the trail and ascend the north side of Sugarloaf Mountain, being careful on the precarious rocks. Descend your ascent route and follow the trail back to Lewis Lake accordingly.

Essential Gear

General hiking boots, water, and proper clothing is sufficient for summer hiking. Trekking poles make things easier, too. For winter, crampons and/or snowshoes, ice axe, and warm clothing is essential for the steep climb.
