North Face of North Peak

Really this is the North Face of the North Peak you've got photographed here. So you can see Index from the town wall. Now I know.

Re: North Face of North Peak

You can see the north face, it is on the left and not illuminated. That is definately the west face illuminated by the setting sun. A sunset would not light up the north face.

Re: North Face of North Peak

The North Face is both in and out of the sunset here. I will grant you that the North Face faces roughly NNW but points more toward true north than exactly NNW. Topozone.

Map showing relationship between Index Town Wall and North Peak of Mt. Index. Note how the true West Face cannot be seen from the town wall.

Remember that the sun sets north of west in the summer so it is perfectly reasonable for a north face to be obliquely luminated by a setting sun.

Compare your shot with this shot from Mt. Persis, which is WNW of the North Peak. In this case the West Face is in the sun and ribs of the North Face (NNW Face) are also in the sun:

Re: North Face of North Peak

After closer inspection, the illuminated face in my photo faces WNW, not NNW. A face pointing NNW will not be directly illuminated by the sunset, even in the summer. Yes, it sets slightly to the north, but not even close to NNW.

Your second link (topozone) shows those ribs you can see behind my tree branch and they are pointing WNW. So my west is closer than your north.

But whatever.
