Relay Peak Nevada  Sucess!

Relay Peak is the highest point on the Tahoe Rim Trail. With an extremely dry winter in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, I did this hike expecting little or no snow. The trailhead from Mt. Rose summit (Mt. Rose highway 431) has parking and easy access. At just over 5 miles this is a fairy easy hike I have done several times in the past. There are a couple of routes you can take, either by following the Mt. Rose trail, and, branching off, or by taking the service road path which is an easier route. I took the easier route as the weather was changing quickly. I started out on a dry trail, and much to my surprise I hit snow about 2 miles in. By the time I got to Frog's Lake the snow had gotten too deep to continue without the snowshoes I had back in the car. I was post holing every other step. In any case, without the snow this is a nice easy hike, with great views of Tahoe and looking west towards Donner Lake.
