Tangent Peak seen from Big Pass to the east. This is the trailhead where I started from. I followed the east slopes up to the south ridge on the left side of the photo to the summit. This is an easy hike with a long drive. A high clearance vehicle is recommended. Many of the road junctions were unsigned in this desolate area so I probably wouldn’t be able to accurately describe how I got here Tangent Peak is the highpoint of the Hogup Mountains at 7,047 feet elevation. The range is located on the northwest end of the Great Salt Lake. The benchmark on the summit was labeled as Terrace. Its name comes from the ghost town of Terrace, Utah which was established in 1869 as an operations base of the Central Pacific Railroad on the route of the First Transcontinental Railroad

Isolated for sure

Three of us made the trip to this peak yesterday (Greg, Kadee & I) and went in from the north and out via Hogup RR / Lakeview. Loved the views from this one but it was nice to have two vehicles since this is so isolated. Thanks for clearing up the Terrace aspect of the benchmark. We were wondering about that.

Good to hear that you guys made it. I probably wouldn’t have had any problems if I was familiar with the area to begin with. I know the roads better now and won’t get lost again. Tangent is definitely a cool and isolated peak.
