Tlaloc & Telapon, 2x4000 in one day.
That time I climbed Tlaloc and Telapon in a single day. I started at 10:00 am. in Río Frío and I got off at 19:30 in San Pablo Ixayoc, Texcoco. They were about 30 km, and 2000 meters of elevation gain. On another occasion I had met with my friends, camping, the Llanos de Tula, which are intermountain grasslands between the two 4000 mentioned. Attached photographs of both events in the galleries of the two mountains. It was just a fairly long walk, with a nice path, although I would recommend doing the itinerary in 2 days to better enjoy the beauty of this National Park. Interestingly, the tip of the Telapon was not so dirty, and my path was also almost lonely (although of course I did the crossing alone). In the plains and in that area there were numerous sources of clean water.
I climbed the Telapón as a teenager with some classmates, our parents and a teacher. If I remember correctly, it isn't demanding at all, except for the last couple of meters that are pretty steep.

From Llano Grande
I went up from Llano Grande on a cloudy autumn day. There are many trails going up, so I forgot about them as I got near the summit and went straight up to be welcomed by a huge statue of Christ at the top.

East ridge
The first time I have cimbed Tlaloc and Telapon in the same day. It wasn´t too difficult but is a great acclimitisation hike for Izta, and you can´t beat the serenity of these mountains... for the second time in as many visits I didn´t see a soul.

Climbed this peak with my two closest friends, and their families who have lived near Telapon their entire lives yet have never climbed it...
This was also Rachel's first time above 4000m in 2+ years... she adapted quickly and really enjoyed this peaceful peak.
We took a different route to the summit and were rewarded with the usual serenity.
After spending 40 minutes on the summit exploring and snacking we decided it was time to move out... on the way down the clouds cleared and we were rewarded with some great views of Izta... kind of like a farewell from an old friend.

Another beautiful day... arrived at Manantiales around 8:30 and was on the summit by 11... I love the tranquility that this mountain offers, hiking to its summit from the north.
The forest was as I remembered... from a fairy tale... I saw noone throughout the entire day. The views were excellent though Izta and Popo were a bit unclear because of the pollution.
Happy to return to this summit as it is one of my favourite places in Mexico.
Also summited two other peaks in and around Manantiales for which I will submit pages later.

This was my third time to summit Telapon. It is a very beautiful mountain and a nice day hike. This time my dad, brother, and i decided to go up it on a Sunday afternoon. Going at a good pace, one can do the round trip in well under five hours. It had snowed for a couple days prior to our ascent. There was some good snow and beautiful ice which i assume was rime ice covering the trees close to the summit.
There is a good deal of trash around Llano Grande, but once you get onto the moutnain a little more, there is really very little trash to be seen in my experience on this gorgous mountain.
Route Climbed: "Aqueduct Route" through Manantiales from San Pablo Date Climbed: 07 Feb 2003
From Texcoco, I took a cab to the village of San Pablo. The cab driver told me the cab ride to San Pablo would be "very expensive", but it turned out to be only 6 US dollars. Set up camp along the edge of a dusty field just above San Pablo, and hiked to the summits of Tlaloc and Telapon in one very long day. Excellent first climbs for acclimating for Mexico's bigger volcanoes.
There is an amazing amount of trash (mostly tin cans) near the summit.
I summited Telepon the morning after I summited Tlaloc its neighbour to the north. It was only my second 4000m+ peak at the time so it put my lungs through the paces pretty seriously.
My guide Gustavo Gonzalez decided to sit out the climb as he was feeling the affects of the altitude and because his diabetes was acting up. So I hiked the pristine forests all on my own and trailblazed my way to the top.
It was one of my favourite summits in all of Mexico as I had the mountain all to myself and it offers serenity at its finest.
