The cheat grasses are cheating!

The cheat grasses are cheating!

Wildfires in RRCNCA, especially those in the loop area, allow visitors to see both the damage caused by these events, as well as the ability of the desert to heal itself over time. While wildfires are nothing new to southern Nevada's Red Rock area, recent fires seem to have been in part FUELED by the thick growth of non-native red brome and cheat grasses. They provide fuel for fires and also compete with the native plants for resources. So far there have been NO plans to control these weeds, as control methods such as using herbicides can be both costly and also damaging to native plants. Several significant wildfires have burned within the Red Rock Canyon NCA in recent years, including: (1) 1998 - a fire occurred in the loop area. By 2003 regrowth made it difficult to find the burn area. (2) June 25, 2005 - Goodsprings fire at over 31,600-acres burned into Red Rocks NCA's southern area. (3) July 22, 2005 - lightning caused 800-acre fire in the loop area. (4) Sept. 6, 2006 - yet another fire was started by lightning in the loop near the visitor's center and burned around 1,500-acres. Re: Lodewijk

The only SOLUTION so far had been to hire more firefighters and buy more firefighting equipment. In my humble opinion, why don't we start finding ways to SAVE money??? We could start COMBINING our resources with other countries - perhaps LEARN from other countries about environmental issues. People HAVE to STOP being so stubborn, and heed the laws of Nature. We only have ONE EARTH!!! (Unless everybody WANTS to run off to Mars, which would be OK with me!!!)

Maybe everyone should become ... FIREMEN!

Re: Lodewijk

You are absolutely right: People should combine ideas and work together for better solutions!
But running off to mars would do the trick as well :P
Have a nice day Larry!
Lo of the ever-raining-lands (aka Holland).... :)

Re: Lodewijk

I was in Holland for several days in 1976.
Amsterdam - the people were a real joy to be with, but I kept waiting for the clouds to leave. We all rented bicycles and headed out in a frenzy across the countryside. Guess what - it started to rain!!!
- Take care. Larry
