Loose Rock

Not my favorite range, but once again you are pushing the limits and setting new standards...in the mountains and in your trip reports. Nice job, my friend.

Nice Report

Thanks for sharing your experience. I enjoy reading and seeing pictures from routes I'll probably never do.

Love the Elks

I will never look at that ridge along Pyramid the same again... and in a good way! Great job in capturing the day and putting it into words!

interesting rocks

the colors and cleaving makes me think volcanic...like the Never Summers perhaps?

Re: interesting rocks

Actually, no. The whole of the Elk Range is almost entirely sedimentary. The rock in the Maroon Creek Valley is almost exclusively shale, tidal mud, clay, inland sediment and organic deposits. The Western Elk Mountains are predominantly shale and clay.
It does make me wonder however if all this rose out of a formation rich in iron.
Helka Chronic has a book on Colorado Geology (Utah as well) that's pretty dam cool if you're into that stuff.
Now the San Juans....THERE'S some volcanic for ya!
Thanks!
