The Southeast face of...

The Southeast face of Kangchenjunga as seen from Goecha La Pass (4940m), Sikkim, India. The peak is the south summit of Kangchenjunga with the South ridge going down to the left and the East ridge going to the right. The west summit can just be seen to the left of the south ridge. Photograph taken on 11th October, 2005 by me. I have uploaded a full size version of this image here

Thanks.. it was an amazing sight with a wall of ice going up almost 12,000 ft above me. Kangchenjunga is an awesome mountain!!

Well, the simple answer is.. you can't climb it. This face is on the Indian side of the mountain. You do not get permission to climb the peak from the Indian side as the mountain is considered holy by the people of Sikkim.



The last expedition from the Indian side was an Austrian one in 2000. They failed to go beyond 21000 ft. But they were attempting the NE spur of Kangchenjunga after reaching the base by going along the Zemu glacier. That's on the other side of the mountain in the above photo. I don't think anybody has ever attempted this face of the mountain. You only reach the South Summit of the mountain from here and then you have a long ridge from there to the Main Summit.
