Not NaziThe Black Cross (Schwarzes Kreuz) is the emblem used by the Prussian Army, and by the army of Germany from 1871 to present. It was designed on the occasion of the German Campaign of 1813
Of course, it was used during WWII and with a swastika added, but the same basic design is still in use today

Re: Not NaziThanks for the description of the origin of this symbol. Still there is some peculiarity in its use here in Austria. The present day area of Austria was never subdued by the Prussian Army or by the army of Germany, except for the years of WWII. This cross was erected in the second half of the 20th century, and it's not a usual symbol in Austria. In this context I have the suspect that it may reflects on the years when Austria belonged to the Dritte Reich. But it's just a guessing - I don't know what was the actual inspiration of this design to be applied on an Austrian mountain

Re: Not NaziWell, officially the cross is dedicated to the memory on both world wars and the Kaerntners, defending their country. But the border is close and in the WW1 also the frontline went quite close to Gartnerkofel.
