Did this climb in the morning before work. Very easy but a lot of fun picking your own route to the top as the trail is not very defined.

Climbed with my fiance, brother, and sister. There was a lot of "choose your own adventure" on the way up. Virtually no wind at the top and terrific views in all directions. We saw a bighorn sheep on the way down, and had an overall great experience. Total time - 5 hours including 45 mins at the summit.

With Mommy and Daddy. Not yet 9 months old, so Daddy carried me. It was about 50F with rain and wind on the summit, but I didn't cry.

Had a morning free before I started a work conference in Vegas, so I went up to Turtlehead along the standard trail from Sandstone Quarry. Awesome scenery for a non-desert native.

Spied an inviting drainage leaving Turtlehead's south slopes into a slot canyon on the northwest side of the Calico Hills. It made for a fun descent and return to the car. The solid rock at the bottom of the gully was far preferable to the slippery stuff on the use trails up.

Did this one on a nice warm day. OUt of shape and that was a painful one, but very worth the summit. In my top 5 favorite summits for sure.

Many times since-- essentially a quickly-accessed training hike.
The routes from Calico Basin on the SE offer much more challenge and solitude:

I hiked this with my 11 year old daughter. We started at 9 a.m. from the Visitor's Center, went through Calico Hills to the Sandstone Quarry and then on to Turtlehead Peak via the standard trail. We hit the summit at 12:30 and were back at the Visitor's Center by 4:00. Perfect weather and surprisingly no crowds to speak of on the mountain. This was my third time on Turtlehead, but it was my daughter's first real mountain.

I only like to do this hike when the mountain is covered in snow or when the temperatures are very cold or preferably both. Mostly because this is the only time (except of course for the summertime when temps exceed 100F) when this peak is not crowded.
Here is the slideshow from our most recent trip up there, enjoy:Turtlehead Peak hike

LV HikerFirst Peak of 2007  Sucess!

Having finally beaten the cold that's been nagging me lately I decided I was ready for a more challenging hike. I selected Turtlehead Peak.

This peak has been on my to do list for sometime now. Everytime I leave my house in the morning I can see this prominant peak. Now when I see it I can look up there and say to myself "Been there, Done that"

Personally I didn't find this peak too much of a challenge. Sure it was a good workout. But I never once wondered if I was going to be able to make it or not.

It starts out as a flat easy hike as you make your way across the desert to the base of the mountain. It gets steeper and steeper until eventually you're making your way up a steep canyon trying to hit the ridgeline that'll take you to the summit.

Up until we hit the ridgeline the weather was pretty nice. I was hiking with just a t-shirt on and was very comfortable...actually a bit warm at times. The canyon blocked much of the wind.

But once we hit the ridgline the wind really picked up. With the sweat from the exertion of the climb starting to evaporate in the wind it got a bit chilly and i had to put my jacket on.

While making our way to the summit after having gained the ridgeline we did notice little patches of snow here and there. My dog Hobo enjoyed playing in the few patches she could find. She loves the snow. I'll have to take her up to Charelston sometime while there's still lots of snow up there and see how she likes that.

We did run into half a dozen other hikers while making the climb.

The view from the top was a bit hazier then I would have hoped for.

This short hike offers what I think are some of the best views of the area. The strip and casinos to the East and the Red rock escarpment to the West. Fantastic!!
