Velebit from Lika

Part of Vaganski Vrh - Sveto Brdo group (its continental side) on the South Velebit from the Lika region on May 2nd 2004. Just few days before fresh greenery began its ascent up the mountain. It will reach tree line in around 20 days. Left is Segestin (1715m), then come Golic (1723m) and Vaganski Vrh (1757m), both in the cloud. On the right end is Babin Vrh (1738m), top also in the cloud. Behind the forested peaks of first step and below main peaks is continental terrace of South Velebit. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

Thanks Mark! That is beauty of Velebit. It is so diverse and has so many faces. Some major chains don't have everything that Velebit has and the only thing Velebit doesn't have is glaciers. But it had them long ago :-)

Re: Lloks more alpine from the east

When looking at Velebit from this road (main road between Gospic and Gracac) I am always surprised how mighty Velebit highest area looks from that angle of view. Continental slope looks much steeper and road passes nearby. In addition, the sun is - from that angle - usually behind mountain, so impression is deeper. Rocky peaks with patches of snow (or full coverage in winter) look as much alpine as possible.
