Overview
This is a popular mountain for those wanting to gain elevation in northern México. This is a nice mountain located about 20 miles east of the city of Saltillo that is part of the Sierra Madre Oriental. It`s heavily forested slopes are an invitation for hikers and climbers.
The standard route is on the northern slopes and it usually takes between 3 and 5 hours to reach the summit trough it, following a winding
and sometimes steep trail. There is another trail that climbs the eastern
ridge of the mountain, this one starts at the town of El Tunal and is very steep and seldom used.

Getting There
From the city of Saltillo drive east on highway 57 about 15 miles and then take the farm road to the village of La Carbonera to the east and drive 5 more miles to the entrance of a ranch on the right hand side called "Los Aromos", leave your car here and take the trail that starts at the end of an old logging road directly to the south facing the mountain on the left side of a barbed wire fence, the trail is very well defined and winds through a nice pine - fir forest taking you to the ridge and then goes along it to the left (east) for another 200 yards to the summit and two mountain huts.
To get to the other trail, keep driving on the same farm road and around the eastern flank of the mountain until you reach El Tunal and inquire locally about the trailhead.

Red Tape
NO permits are required, no fees either. As in any forested mountain, is recomended not to disturb any wildlife or plants and please NO CAMPFIRES!, let`s protect our last remaining forests.
You may have to pay a small fee for the parking space, but is better to do so than to leave your car by the road.
When To Climb
It can be climbed any time, the best months are February trough May and
October-November. Be aware of storms in the other months.
Camping
Camping is allowed, but there are no designated areas (this is not a national park) the best places are at and near the summit close to the huts. This part of the mountain is privately owned but open to the public, the owner is a well known climber.

Untitled CommentThe name of the ranch where you start to hike to Las Nieves is a place called "Los Aromos", there you can leave your car, you might give a tip to the owners.
