Photos from Karavanke
Together with the Julian and Steiner Alps, Karavanke are the third major mountain massive in Slovenia. They are also the longest mountain chain in our country, measuring in length more than 120 km from Tarvisio in Italy to Slovenj Gradec in NE Slovenia. They are the natural continuation of the Carnic Alps main ridge; both massives together (250 km) represent the longest ridge in the Alps at all.The ethimological source of the name Karavanke is fairly obscure and unknown, appearing from the ancient times. Probably it is of the Celtic origin.
On the southern side, Karavanke are of mild appearance, consisiting mostly of steep grassy slopes intermingled with rock bumps and short ribs. To the north, they are falling with higher walls and deep gullys. The rock is mostly very friable, although one could find the fine climbing areas there.
In the album I've collected a set of photos I had shot during my frequent visits in these mountains in recent years. I hope, you'll enjoy them, being more acquainted with these beautiful mountains, as well.
