Overview

Baring In Winter
Dazzling photo from Gimpilator on Heybrook Lookout
Heybrook Ridge just a couple mile east of the town of Index. It is not a very prominent peak with only 100 feet of prominence but it is a well known highpoint on the ridge. It is home to Heybrook Lookout which is a very famous hiking spot for families and dayhikers. It's location with a trailhead right off of Route 2 makes it very popular on most sunny day and in summer this lookout can be quiet crowded. Views are great from the lookout and are decent from the true highpoint as well provided you don't mind looking through powerlines. The trail to the summit was revamped back in 2017 and it is still as family friendly as it has always been.

That being said Heybrook Lookout is home to great views of Mount Baring, Mount Index and Mount Persis as well as a number of other peaks in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. There is one good viewing area just below the looking but for the best views you must walk up to the top of the tower to get the view of Mt. Baring and totally clear views of Mount Index and Persis.

The trail located right of of route is a 3.5 mile, 1100 foot elevation to the true summit and 900 feet to the lookout tower. The trail itself is well established and there are no scrambles or tricky areas. It starts off gentle for the first hundred feet than goes a steeper grade all the way until nearing the top of the ridge. Once the trail top the ridge it heads east gradually ascending until near the lookout where there a quick steeper section to the lookout.
