The Lehman Cave

Located just after the entrance to Great Basin National Park near the base of Jeff Davis Peak is the little known, but world famous quality Lehman Cave. At a price of $10.00, a ranger will take you 1/4 of a mile into the cave for 90 minutes, through many but not all, of the cave's lit rooms. The white, tan, reddish and even purple lighting makes the cave seem like, as one SP'er put it, "a real life hallucination". This cave is home to the unique Parachute Sheild, an angles ear, cave bacon, flowstone, draperies, as well as several other famous formations.

The Lehman Cave is open all year round. In the summer months the cave sees a lot of traffic, so reservations would be more than a great idea. Each tour allows up to 20 people. Be sure to arrive early because if you are not there within 15 minutes of the start of the tour, they will sell off your ticket. A camera, small flashlight and a light jacket is all you are allowed to bring with you into the cave. No food, water, gum, tripods ect......are allowed in the cave. Because of falling rocks the lower two rooms are closed to the public.

The lighting used today is causing algae to grow on the walls and lint from peoples clothing is sticking to the features of the cave as well. This combined with people who flat out ignore the rules and touch the cave features make this cave in danger of being closed in the future. Please stay on the trail and help preserve this beautiful cave for future generations.

A Neat Spot

I was fortunate to be part of the crew that worked on the most recent survey of Lehman Caves. During the process, we were allowed unsupervised access to portions of the cave the public hasn't been allowed in for decades. The cave is far larger than one gets to see on the public tour. There's even a Native American mummy back in there. Good stuff!

Lucky you....I hear they do candle light tours now in the summer months, just like the 1st days of the cave. I am jelous that you got to check out the lower rooms of the cave. The rangers always talk the place down but deep down I knew there was more to see. Never heard of the Native American Mummy back there, thats just too cool......many thanks for the information and happy trails out there cp0915.
