Off the beaten path

Early May I landed in Arequipa, Peru. Before moving on to higher goals, I needed to get used to the thin air. I couldn't find very much information about peaks and hikes that were not too high, so I asked around and learned that the area around Chivay was the best place to go.

The lively tourist town of Chivay lies at the banks of Rio Colca, just over 3600m. Further west lies Colca Canyon, a great place for hiking and for watching condors. I would go there later, but first I headed the other way, north east of Chivay, following Rio Colca upstream along it's true left side. In Arequipa I had heard that it was a safe place to go hiking and camping wild, but there would be virtually no other tourists. Fine by me!
