| derekp62 | The Sparks were Flying! ![]() Date Climbed: Jul 19, 2006 | |
| With Thunderheads popping up and down the valley we weren't sure we'd have an opportunity to summit during our mid-week hike. We watched a rain storm pass the peak in the early AM and then had clear skys so we continued to the peak. With sun on the peak we noticed the clouds getting darker on the saddle we were going to have to cross to get back. Spent a worrying last 20min. in a hail and lighnting storm. Luckily, the lightning was more than a few miles away. Still closer than I would have liked. Had a nice chat with Roger and Al at the Barcroft Station while we waited out the lightning! Nice bunch of folks! The lightning stopped us on Mt. Langley two days later! :-( | ||

| Camped at 11,000 feet after driving up via the exciting Silver Canyon 4WD route. The lingering snow made for a long day, but Mark managed to afterwards fly us safely and quickly back to SJC in his fast Mooney. | ||

| Aside from the miserable drive, a flat tire, and sharing the mountain with more than 20 Marines in training, the climb the next morning was quick and somewhat enjoyable. The hike back seems to take forever. Made it up in 3:30, with half of the Marines passing us on the way up. A good conditioning hike, but with that drive, I doubt I'll ever return. | ||

| An early start means plenty of Marmot sightings on the way up. Hiked this one with my brother. Still a little snow near the summit. The Sierra still has plenty of north facing snow but the view was hazy. Might have been smoke blown up from the San Bernardino fires. | ||

| dpatmalloy | Trek from Bishop ![]() Date Climbed: Jun 15, 2006 | |
| My girlfriend and I left Bishop on June 9th and walked through the White Mountains, reaching the summit six days later. We had planned to continue North to Boundary Peak and Nevada, but 50 mph winds and springs covered by snowfields turned us around. Go trek through the White Mountains - Sagehen Flat, Blanco Mountain, Cottonwood Basin and Tres Plumas Flat are all beautiful, unspoiled places! | ||

| Robin and I got our usual Alpine Start™, leaving Bishop at 10 after a leisurely breakfast. There were a ton of cars in the parking area, and we saw most of those people coming down on our way up (I suspect that the majority really did get an alpine start). We summitted uneventfully, passed a few moments up there, then headed back to the car and home to Bishop for pizza and beer. | ||

| downbooties | The researchers' road ![]() Date Climbed: Oct 10, 2003 | |
| The last bit of road before the trailhead/gate was pretty fun in my Chevy Metro. I got a late start because I underestimated the driving time from Horton Creek campground, but it isn't a long hike, so it turned out fine. On the way down, a big pick-up truck full of college boys (researchers) was heading/bouncing up the "trail." | ||

| Spent night in truck getting acclimated (frost on inside of windshield in morning). Great trail and relatively gentile climb to top. Weather on top at 1:00 PM in mid 40s with 5-10 MPH wind and clear skies. The view from the top almost as good as the view from Mount Whitney. Hiking time 8 hours. A great peak to hike in October. | ||

| 9.11.05 Hiked with 8 others. Very cold morning. Reported to be 17F. Summitted in 7hrs. Descended off trail. No altitude problems this time. ----------- 7.?.05 Solo. First time getting sick at altitude. Had to nap halfway. Almost vomitted. Took 9.5 hours to summit and almost got caught in a violent electrical storm. Came back to a dead battery. Got help from a guy who just pulled in as I got back to the TH. | ||

| Afternoon weather cooperated and I went up-- easy way to get to top of Great Basin but welcome after Yosemite. Take care on the road. Any regular car can make it all the way, but I saw an off-road edition Toyota Tacoma with a flat while I drove by (after offering help) in a convertible Mustang. Speed can kill your tires here; not much else can. | ||

| Suffered a bit of a mental fart on this one. I figured this would be a good way to stretch out my legs after biking 200 miles with 29k feet of climbing. Was about 48 and sunny at the gate so I only wore a polypro shirt with leg warmers and light gloves. At the summit it was 27 with 30-40 mph winds. An hour later it started to snow and I had lost most of the feeling in my face. Got back to the car for a rt of ~4h, cranked up the heater and cursed the road for the next 17 miles. | ||
