Winthrop Icefall/Shoulder

Winthrop Icefall/Shoulder

Good view of the lower Winthrop Glacier Icefall (right-center) crossing and entry on to the "Shoulder" (far right below the left buttress on the Russell Cliff route). Move quickly below the icefall to access the shoulder. June 2008. Photo courtesy of Mount Rainier National Park

Rob ....

Is this the view from Camp Schurman? The
track to the left is the Emmons Glacier route,
going up 'The Corridor?'

Do you have a summer job working at MRNP??
That must be pretty incredible. Looks like
the Russell Cliff route is a little
challenging, and I can understand a climber
making haste beneath that Icefall. Amazing!!

Re: Rob ....

This picture was offered up by the climbing rangers at MNRP. I 'm in occasional correspondance with Mike Gauthier, the lead ranger at MNRP. The track on the left is the Corridor. This shot looks like it may have been shot from high on Steamboat Prow. St. Elmo's Pass would be too low to get this vantage. The icefalls are quite active late in the year.

Re: Rob ....

Even the Corridor looks a bit challenging!
Bet you can't wait to get up there again?

Re: Rob ....

Yes, indeed! Probably the Winthrop side for me on the next go 'round on this side of the mountain. Rob
