While exploring Glacier National Park maps are essential for route planning on the numerous peaks.

With just some simple education on how to read a map the outdoor enthusiast can gain some fantastic information. In addition to the obvious location of peaks, streams and other geographic features it is also possible to determine the elevation as well as slope of a particular route.

This table below is organized to help in the reader’s effort to help locate topographic maps in Glacier National Park.

To use this table locate the general area where the mountain is located and then identify the 7.5 Minute Series Topographic Map associated with the area. Follow this link, Libre Map, and type in the peak or geographic feature into the search engine. To save the map on your computer right click with your mouse on the “TIFF” link. Select “Save Target As” and store the file on the desktop or a selected folder. Once it is downloaded open it with a photo viewing program such as Windows Photo Gallery.

There are at least two ways to use this information.

a) For a known geographic feature, such as Seward Mountain.

To locate the proper Quad map for “Seward Mountain” type Seward into the Libre Map search engine. The results will come up and identify “Many Glacier” as the quad that Seward Mountain is found on. Download it and view it.

b) To locate other peaks near peaks featured in SummitPost, such as having a climb scheduled near Ahern Pass such as Ahern Peak.

With the table below locate the link to Ahern. Ahern Peak is located on the Ahern Pass quad map. Enter “Ahern Pass” into the Libre Map search engine. To save the map on your computer right click with your mouse on the “TIFF” link. Select “Save Target As” and store the file on the desktop or a selected folder. Once it is downloaded open it with a photo viewing program such as Windows Photo Gallery.
