A crevasse high on the SW ridge of Jatunmontepuncu
The danger with this crevasse is not falling into it, since the route doesn't cross it. It runs along the SE edge of the SW ridge for a short while. I'm looking at it from the ridge, and realize that the other side of the crevasse is a very dangerous cornice. When the crevasse deepens, the cornice will surely break eventually, triggering a potentially dangerous avalanche.
Earlier today, looking at the ridge from below, I couldn't see this danger. I did see a few seracs high on the slopes, as well as traces of older avalanches. I stayed well clear of both.
