I know this peak as Paungda Danda; the picture on "Flick" is some years latest than this one, but shows the same break...it's interesting...i think maybe it was a land-slide rather than a snown avalanche....
Thanks for you comment, Big Lew

Re: Looks like a..........

Hi Sylvia,

I have learned that many lesser Himalayan peaks have several names. I guess that part of this is because in places two regions can see different sides of the same peak, and because of the difficulty getting from one region to another, each region has a different name for the peak.

Then there are ethnic differences, religious differences, language differences, and when you put all these things together you get different names for the same mountain.

The larger peaks are different - famous - and so the names are usually agreed upon. But, interestingly, with #1 (Everest) and #2 (K2) - for various reasons the now-accepted names are the WESTERN names!

And also interesting - some of the peaks just below 8,000 meters seem to be nameless. Annapurna II (7937m - just over half a football pitch from 8,000m)? Really? No local name for this incredible peak, just a few meters in elevation from being an 8,000'er?

Strange...

Peace,

Big Lew
