Avalanche debris right below the icefall, N of the Mutmalspitze

We were fortunate to find the route in excellent shape. From what I understand, the best route through the icefall is on the far left hand side; the drawback of that is that it's right next and below a steep rocky ridge, and rockfall can be a serious hazard. Indeed we saw plenty of rocks in the icefall, but few came down (not counting the ones we dislodged from the ice ourselves). The fact that it was around freezing and in the shadow while we climbed certainly won't have been a disadvantage. But, in addition to rockfall, this photo shows that there are more dangers. The avalanche causing this debris field can't have been more than couple of weeks ago... 12 July 2012.
