ran up to the summit. coming down, I was slowed by a horse carivan. the young cowboy said I may as well stay behind, since horses are faster than hikers. I asked to pass and was finishing my lunch at the T.H. when he arrived with his guided clients. maybe he'll think twice before saying those words again to a hiker.

Picturesque hike
What a cool hut in the end. Was a little warm even in May. I was glad I wasn't around when it started hailing in Rapid City the next day though.
This is an easy hiking trail for families, that gets steep enough at the end for kids to say they "climbed a mountain." We hiked at dusk in the summer, so the crowds were small but there was plenty of "evidence of horse use."
Hiked this peak with my 2 brothers and parents on my first trip out west. Very nice area!

Family Black Hills Trip
Daughter Vanessa and I did Harney Peak on the second year of our highpoint quest. It was number 12 of my 49 state high points.

Winter Hike on Harney
Sylvan Lake was frozen and snow and ice dominated the forest as we hiked past the impressive towering Cathedral crags across the ridge to the spiral staired lookout on top. from the summit the entire range seems smaller and less intricate than it truly is.
We finished the loop hiking past Little Devil's Tower as the trail strolls steeply downhill through the rock spiked gorge rolling through pines back to the trailhead. Awesome trip that beckons me back to the "Hills!"

After the overnight rains
Ovenight rains on Harney Peak made for a cool, fresh hike up for our group - Rachel, Tina, Eric, and Tom (see photos). The early morning sun over the clouds below, made for some spectacular viewing - a good example of nature at it's best.

Hiked with Cousin and 3 Kids
Hiked with cousin and 3 of our kids - ages 8, 9, and 11. We left the younger kids back at the camp. With the ages we took, it was a fun four hour hike with a number of bouldering diversions. With younger kids, I think there would have been more complaining as well as taken more than five hours. We took trail 9 up and 4 down. It was absolutely gorgeous - beautiful forest the whole way. The trail is good. Solo, my cousin and I could have jogged it. Anyhow, the next morning the two of us jogged up and down the Cathedral Spires trail - that was fun.
Hiked it with my sister on the 4th of July weekend. Beautiful scenery.

Route Climbed: Trail #9
After stopping by to visit the president's at Mt. Rushmore, I jogged up Harney. The view was very nice, but the most rewarding part was the mountain goat that I was able to get some pictures of at the top.

Brisk and Windy
Short hike up the trail. It was windy and cold. We just completed the Monster in North Dakota the day before.

Always Fun
Went up Trail 4, and down Trail 9. It took about 75 minutes up, and 65 minutes down. As always, the views were great. This was much better than the Memorial Day weekend two years ago, when everyone was treated to an hour of heavy hail and lightning.
