Bonanza Peak as seen from the...

Bonanza Peak as seen from the summit of Switchback Peak to the east on August 5, 2001. The prominent glacier and snow thumb is the Mary Green Glacier. The peak at left is North Star Mountain (8,068 ft)--this is what Bonanza used to be known as before the names were interchanged by the USGS in 1904. This interchanging of names meant a lot of climbers of the early 1930's thought Bonanza had already been climbed (because today's North Star Mountain is a veritable walk-up), so they didn't bother going for the first ascent. They assumed it had already been climbed. The actual first ascent of Bonanza did not occur until June 28, 1937.
