Breitspitze summit

Breitspitze summit

The last part of the trail to the Breitspitze (2196m) follows the wide and undulating east ridge. We're close to the summit cross now, and while we can't see that yet, there is a sharp drop on the other end. The position of the cross, right at the end of the ridge, surely is meant to ensure that it's easily seen from the valley floor, far below. The nearby village of Partenen (1051m) is only a couple of kilometers away. However, this prominent position, while good for visibility, means many of those hiking up here don't realize they are not on the true summit. As I'm still hiking up myself, I still have to discover that as well, but simply from looking around, it's obvious that there are quite a few other small bumps on the ridge that are a little higher than where the cross stands. But first I'll go there, have a break and admire the views, then I'll go and try to determine which bump is the real summit. 26 July 2013.
