HP # 32  Sucess!

This was fun because I talked to about 25 other highpointers on my short walk up and back. Met a couple who were at #49, only lacking Wyoming, and a couple other folks who had recently done Whitney and Rainier, so it was fun talking to people with this same interest.

US Highpoint #6 - Charles Mound  Sucess!

Great weather, nice stroll; not much else to say. Saw approximately a dozen people during the hike in and out.

Thank you to the Owners for allowing us access to Illinois' Highpoint!

Larvitour Stop #27  Sucess!

Parked at the street and had a nice walk up. Cloudy, but no rain. Saw some rogue cornstalks sprouting up from the soybean field.

Peaceful, sunny day  Sucess!

Enjoyed seeing this (for me) unknown part of the country. The view from the top is outstanding. First of three midwestern high points for me on this trip.

Highpoint #3  Sucess!

Had a nice hike to the summit with my brother and my friend back in 2011.

With Kids  Sucess!

Climbed up with my wife and two kids (a 3.5 and 1 year old). We were on our way out to Iowa to visit my wife's family. Saw Mr. Wuebbel working on his driveway while we climbed up. Was a nice visit and was my 26th highpoint and first in 5 years.

Highpoint #41  Sucess!

Would have liked to spend more time enjoying the view but the bugs limited our early morning hike. (After moving away from the Midwest 8 years ago sort of forgot about the humidity and bugs!)Many people were headed up after us - unfortunately we didn't take the time to chat much as we had a 19 hour roadtrip back home to Utah. Note:Got there a day early and did the touristy thing in Galena on Friday but stayed in Plattsville,WI at a new Super 8 which is due north of the highpoint - much cheaper than staying in Galena and the Mexican restuarant next door had $0.99 Margaritas M - Th!.

#30  Sucess!

Cousin had wedding night before in La Crosse WI and when I realized same weekend this was open no way I was missing out. Beautiful crisp walk on country road. Very picturesque and enjoyable. And now I have 30 high points which sounds much better than 29.

First!  Sucess!

This was my first "climb"!
Realized that the highpoint in Illinois is only open 4 weekends each year, so we had to get out there on the last day. Stagecoach Trail was closed (bridge out?) between Warren and Apple River - causing a major detour. The detour signs take you WAY out of the way, luckily we ignored them and took some gravel roads around the closure.

A lovely walk up the hill from the main road on a nice day. Did it in the mid-afternoon, ran into another couple headed up on our way down.

We FINALLY timed it to have entry to the farm.  Sucess!

We made it finally, LOL. The family only opens up the farm 8 days a summer. We had to schedule our whole trip around this gnat infested farm. Hiked the mile up through the property and met 4 other state high pointers on the way. State HP #35!!!!

Nice walk  Sucess!

Took fellow highpointer and cousin with me for this arduous climb on an Open Access day. Great little walk with a decent view and bench at the top

Highpoint #8  Sucess!

I'm fairly certain I accidentally poached this one. I was on a 2000 mile weekend journey to hit the high points of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. I "summited" Illinois at about 6:30 in the morning before anyone was awake.

My Home State HP  Sucess!

Charles Mounds, 1,235' above sea level, is Class One and our country's 45th highest state highpoint. Climbed on September 3, 2006. Fortunately, the Owners provide lawn chairs enabling weary climbers to rest after climbing the highest parcel of real estate in the Land of Lincoln. Climbers desiring to achieve Illinois' highpoint must ascent 75' from the trailhead. Charles Mounds has a very limited climbing season like Mt. Everest since it's located on private property. Verify accessibility prior to commencing climb.

Climbed up on the last open day of the year. Met a couple of other highpointers as well. Glad to have this limited-access highpoint under my belt.

Great Lakes Road Trip  Sucess!

"Summitted" at a little after 9 on Saturday morning. #35 HP for me. With Lillian and friend Jere. Sorry the pups could not join us for this one. Met a few other highpointers on this rare open day.

This started it all  Sucess!

This Started it all so far for our family. The coolest thing about this is the people we met along the stroll up the hill. A Dad and his boys from England. He was bummed because his camera had run out of batteries and those boys wanted nothing to do with this steamy August morning. A couple from NC travelling in an RV were on there 43ird HP and two dudes from out East simply driving, trying to get as many in as possible. One guy was in his mid thirties while the other guy was at 25.
I recommend staying in Gelena the night before and enjoy some of the local eateries. The hike to the top is easy enough but it's in the country and can get quite humid and hot. Pay attention and this one is a picnic. The top is shaded and cool and will be reminiscent of an era gone by in this country. Thanks Wuebbels' Family
