Route Climbed: Most everything Date Climbed: 1962 +
First went up here with my family in '62 and many, many times since. Climbed most of the high points and even swam in the lake several times. Brrrrrrrr!
Route Climbed: The Watchman, HIllman Peak, and Mount Scott. Date Climbed: September 08, 2004
I drove through the night from Portland after work. There was nobody at the fee booth so I got in for free! Took a quick nap, and hiked up the Watchman to watch the sunrise. Next I scrambled up Hillman Peak (taking a far more difficult route than neccessary by mistake). After checking out the visitor's center, I hiked Mount Scott and headed for Newberry Caldera in Central Oregon. Crater Lake is truly a beautiful place!
Route Climbed: Garfield Peak and Applegate Peak Date Climbed: July 22, 2004
Took trail from Rim Village to summit of Garfield Peak. Then descended to south and ascended pumice meadows east to summit of Applegate Peak (see pic). From car to Applegate took me and my climbing companions (15 and 8 years-old) 2 1/2 hours. Note the Garfield Peak trail is closed about 300 feet below the top because people have been going around the snowfields causing erosion. It's easy to cross the snowfields and stay on trail or snow if you're not a tourist in tennis shoes.
Route Climbed: The Watchman, Mt. Garfield, Wizard Island summit Date Climbed: 2002, 3 July, 2004
Hard to "summit" a volcano that imploded 7,700 years ago, but have been to various parts of this amazing place. I agree with Morgan- if you only have one day, take the boat ride & check out Wizard Island. Go swimming, too- looking throught the clearest water on earth & realizing you can't see the bottom (that it's at least a couple hundred feet below you) is an unreal feeling- no better way to experience the Lake! A circumnavigation on skis would be the way to go in the winter!!
Spend a full day there, beginning at sunrise (breathtaking sight) took the drive around Rim Road early to take in the sights and summitted Mt. Scott by the afternoon. The boats to Wizard Island weren't running- bummer. Great place to see.

Nice detour
This really isn't a mountain... But anyway, I visited the park during a Cascades climbing trip. It made for part of a nice day off. Note that the trail to the Watchman was closed due to snow when I was there in late July. Anyway, we were on our way to Thielson so we did not linger too long.
Route Climbed: Garfield Peak, Wizard Island Summit Date Climbed: July 2001
Spent a few days of leisurely hiking/camping in July, 2001. Enjoyable park. If you have one day, and one day only, take the boat ride and hike Wizard Island.
Route Climbed: circumnavigation Date Climbed: February 1997
Stupid to do it in snowshoes. Next time I'll do it with Nordic skis! Still, never saw anyone on the whole trip except in the first/last 3 miles or so. Began in mid morning, tramped well after dark by moonlight. Slept in a bivy bag inside a tree well (a superb natural shelter in the Pacific NW), then started off again around 8:00am, was finished in early afternoon.
A motivated and semi-skilled skier could do it all in a day if the moonlight and snow conditions are good. Summited most peaks, skipped a couple I had done in the summer.
