Introduction
With 65 miles of shoreline, Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County is Maryland’s largest freshwater lake. There are plenty of choices in this four-season resort area: fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, biking and golf.
Also found here is Adventure Sports Center International, one of two in the U.S. and only twelve worldwide, this amazing Olympic-style whitewater course has a controlled water environment, perfect for whitewater training as well as fun. Also rock climbing/rappelling, mountain biking and hiking activities are offered by various groups.
Once temperatures drop (usually in late November), there’s ice fishing at the lake. That’s also when skiers and snowboarders arrive at the Wisp at Deep Creek Mountain Resort. For something different, try snow tubing -- Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park has seven 800-foot long tubing lanes.
Deep Creek State Park and the State Forests have several trail networks for hiking and there are campgrounds scattered throughout the area both established and backcountry.
