Goodbye Ernestas

Goodbye Ernestas

Ernestas, was an incredibly nice and strong climber from Lithuania who I had the good fortune to meet on Broad Peak. He was murdered this week while attempting to climb Nanga Parbart. I am not very good with words at this point in time but thought this was a fitting photo to immortalise Ernie on a website devoted to the pursuit of mountaineering. RIP mate.

That is

sad to hear, was he killed by an avalanche or fall?

Anyway, this is a beautiful photo to remember him by!

A truly...

sad thing that happened. Climbers know these things can happen but they still can't resist the lure of the mountains. This reminds me of Ned Gillette who was killed while camping with his wife there.
I was about to say be careful climbing out there, but how can anyone be careful! So sad!
Thanks for the great photo,
Marc

What's holding Him up?

Great picture! But I gotta wonder what's holding him up? It looks like both feet aren't holding much or any of his weight.

Re: What's holding Him up?

Yeah he's just edging with his boots. Was quite a gnarly chunk of rock

Animals...

Grrrr.....

As an American - a citizen of a country founded on freedom of religion, and a country that has suffered from the murderous acts of these animals, I feel great anger as I learn of this man's fate.

Let's not forget that Pakistan is a nuclear-armed country. I fear for the future of mankind with so much power in the hands of a few who are so disgustingly ignorant...

I have my friend Afzal here, and there are numerous other Pakistani members. I do not direct my anger towards them - only the tiny few that think that killing in the name of their "God" is OK...

Will ALL mankind grow out of such ignorant attitudes before we destroy ourselves and the beautiful planet we live on?

I sure hope so...

What a shame

What an absolute shame to lose such great people doing something so peaceful and pure as climbing. I feel for all of the families and friends of these climbers.
