Overview

Baker MeadowThis is the scenic Baker Meadow which is also a good place to hike up to Baker Peak. 07-04-2008.

The Greenhorn Summit is located in Southern California about an hour Northeast of Bakersfield. The North-South running range has a variety of peaks, trails, and also a ski resort named Alta Sierra. The Greenhorn summit is also a popular mountain biking and OHV area.

A general estimate of the range would be from Woodward Peak (South) to Parker Pass on the North near Johnsondale. Some of the peaks include Woodward Peak, Red Mountain, Shirley Peak, Cooks Peak, Unal Peak, Cane Peak, Black Mountain, Split Mountain, Bohna Peak, Sunday Peak, Portuguese Peak, Panorama Peak, Peel Peak, Sugarloaf Mountain, Bull Run Peak, Tobias Peak & Lookout, Baker Peak, and Baker Point & Lookout.

There are also a significant number of meadows including Frog Meadow, Packsaddle Meadow, Speas Meadow, French Joe Meadow, Powder Horn Meadow, Pup Meadow, Bear Meadow, Double Bunk Meadow, Holey Meadow, Parker Meadow, Upper Parker Meadow,Soldier Meadow, Horse Meadow, Poison Meadow, Bull Run Meadow, Tyler Meadow, Dry Meadow, Baker Meadow, Portuguese Meadow, and more.

Getting There

Lake Isabella Lake Isabella and surrounding areas from Split Mountain on November 29th, 2008.

From Wofford Heights take SR 155, 7.7 miles to Greenhorn Summit.

~I-5 North to Bakersfield, exit 178 east. Go to Lake Isabella and exit on SR155, follow signs to Wofford Heights.

~From Ridgecrest, Hwy 14 to 178 west, follow signs to Kernville, then go west on 155 to Wofford Heights.

~From 99 southbound, take 155 east to Greenhorn Summit, turn left on 24S15.

~It is also possible to take Rancheria Road from Highway 178 in Rio Bravo near Bakersfield though it is a dirt road for much of the way.

~From Springville take 190 through Quaking Aspen to Western Divide Highway.

~From 99 take avenue 56 near Earlimart East. Turn left past California Hot Springs.

~From Kernville go North on Mountain 99 through Johnsondale to Parker Pass Drive.

Camping

Camping is allowed. Campfire permit required for campfires. Lots of campgrounds in the area including Evans Flat, Alder Creek, Cedar Creek, Davis Camp, Rancheria Rd., Panorama, Rhymes Campground, Frog Meadow, Holey Meadow, Redwood Meadow, & Long Meadow campgrounds.

Hotel accommodations are available in nearby Lake Isabella, Kernville, and Wofford Heights.

Two corrections

Tule River Ranger District has been renamed - now it's the Western Divide RD Also, you do not need a campfire permit when having a campfire within a developed campground. You only need them for dispersed or remote area camping. Here's a link to get one online.
