Snake Dike

With Duane, great view and climb. Cables were closed for repairs, had the summit pretty much to ourselves for three hours.

Looking on both sides

Episode 1: The slow backpack method. My friend went into diabetic shock just before we reached camp. I got him to wash down some candy with OJ while he was incoherent, but before he passed out. No bears though, and a nice mellow pace.
Episode 2: Snake Dike, took this Norwegian hottie I'd recently met up this route, married her 3 years later. It's a good route for that kind of thing.
Episode 3: Started at Tenaya Lake, up Clouds Rest on our way to HD, then learned that the shuttle bus times had changed, so had to run all the way down the trail to the valley, made it with 20 minutes to spare, but no summit.

Second trip up to Half Dome, first when the cables were up. Great view from the top, of course!

Cables  Sucess!

I've been up here by the cables route from Happy Isles three times (Fall 2006, Fall 2007, Fall 2010). Was worth breaking camp early and beating the crowds. Each time I went up and down just outside of the cables, which made a few people unhappy. But honestly, I felt much safer that way than sitting on my butt for 10 minutes behind someone who has stalled in between the cables.

Cables Route  Sucess!

Solo on the cables route. Left trailhead at 4:45AM and was glad I did. By the time I got down the cables around 10:30AM and the line was probably 75 people deep just to get on. No surprise the quota was established the following summer.

Hikers Unite  Sucess!

One of the best hikes I've done. Went with a big group this time, and most made the top. So much better on the cables with the quota system in effect.

Tenaya Lake TH  Sucess!

Hike the cables route after stopping by at Clouds Rest. Even with the crowds I still had fun and will be back soon. With Dennis H.

Half Dome

I have approached this from nearly every angle. Valley Floor, Tuolomne, and Glacier Point. All great. Valley Floor is the toughest. The hike never gets old. It is scenic and challenging.

Cables Route  Sucess!

Went up the John Muir Trail and went back down the Mist Trail, and realized I should have done it the other way around just like most people do, upon seeing over a thousand people on the trail near Vernal Falls. The scenery at the beginning and end of this hike was awesome, but I didn't care much for the sandy trail in the middle. The cables were a lot of fun. See "Investigating the Hype" trip report for details.

avoid cables  Sucess!

a technical route is the way to go on this baby. I have quite an axe to grind about the attitude embodied on the cables route.

Perfect day for a grueling, but incredible, hike!  Sucess!

Hiked the second full day that cables have been up for the 2011 season. Left the Bay Area at 1:30AM, on the trail by 6:00AM. Mist Trail felt more like Hurricane Trail - the Merced River is raging this year! Reached the cables around 11:00AM and there weren't too many people at that time, but on the way down at 12:00PM there were a lot more people going up the cables and arriving at the top of the sub dome. The view from the top of Half Dome is unreal. Took the JMT on the way down because Mist Trail was way too wet/flooded. Arrived back at Happy Isles around 5:00PM.

Cable-free  Sucess!

We drove up from the Bay Area, arriving in the park at midnight. We climbed the cables route, reaching the summit by 5a. There was almost no snow on the entire route (a path was cleared through what remained), but the cables were not yet "up". Awesome sunrise on top of Half Dome!
