The Extreme Climb!
Thought I would post this for the hell of it... Climbed on Augest 3, 4, 5 or somewhere along that time...
Let me warn you before you read this... This was a pretty extreme and controversial climb. Only attempt if you are an experienced in all disciplines of climbing including alpine, ice, mountaineers and not being killed by the elements.
After getting our fix of Washington (Starbucks) we headed to the base of Diamond Head AKA Le' Ahi Mountain (that prominent peak seen from Waikiki Beach). The the U.S. dug out many lookout bunkers on this mountain before WW2. If you arrive too late you will have to get in line to wait for parking. Luckily, we had to wait only 3 minutes. Now this hill reminds me a lot like Tiger Mountain with its crowded trails and lines of people trying to get up but with way better views and a little more interesting of a trail.
The trail starts as pavement then turns into dirt. As you pass a few good view points you come upon a tunnel. Luckily, the tunnel was lit otherwise a light would have come in handy. After the tunnel we climbed a steep flight of stairs which led us into bunker. After heading up a spiral staircase we entered the ‘gun turret area’ or whatever they call it. Inside there was some dude selling “I Did It Certificates”. We had made to the crowded top. Besides my family and I there were probably only two other families of Haoles (Hawaiian for white people) even my step-mom and brother are part Asians…. If you are in Oahu and want to take a break from surfing and babe watching, take a camera and head to the top of Diamond Head and don’t forget you camera.
