Route Climbed: Lassen Trail Date Climbed: August 8, 2003
What is arguably the easiest big Cascade peak to summit was a really trying time for me. Coming off a badly sprained ankle, I did this hike with my friend, Brian, for the first of this years' annual hiking trip. I suffered through the climb and was really in pain with a re-swollen ankle at the top. Coming down was twice as worse and long. What should have been about a 2 hour round trip turned into 6 for me as an 80 year old woman called Granny passed by me as well as young children. Oh yeah, I did this one in style! Then, afterwards, all the campgrounds were full so we ended up sleeping in the car at a rest stop somewhere east of Susanville on our way to Yosemite. Moral to the story, let your injuries heal!
Having 2 weeks in Sacramento, headed up to Lassen on the weekend. Had some fresh snow and hale up there. The great peak and my first meting with the volcanoes. The whole area is very beatiful and it must a great place to go in winter.
Route Climbed: Lassen Peak Trail Date Climbed: August 2, 2002
I started up the trail after 7 p.m. and reached the summit just as it got completely dark. Neat views of lightning flickering in a thunderstorm about 30 miles to the east as the horizon darkened. Hiked down by headlamp.
Route Climbed: cross country from visitor's centre Date Climbed: 11 March, 2001
My first winter ascent of a 'real' mountain, and first 'mountaineering (i.e. crampons and ice axe)' ascent as well. Started with a FULL pack down at the S visitor's center, totally out of energy and really cold by the time I had snowshoed all the way to Lake Helen to set up my tent. The next day was beautiful, though, with nice firm snow and virtually no clouds in the sky (just COLD & really windy towards and on the actual summit). Hooked up with some guy (nice as I recall) who verified my self-arrest ability & made sure I didn't put on my crampons backwards. Able to glissade down too, which was fun! Great trip, and great climb!
Route Climbed: standard trail Date Climbed: 27 October, 2001
Hiked up with Rachel in the early afternoon. We encountered 2 other groups, I think. Cool view from up top (not 1/2 as nice as in the winter, though!), but freezing-assed cold (literally, and with the wind [it was probably going 40-50 mph]-chill it was even colder).
Route Climbed: The trail to the summit Date Climbed: July 1972
In July 1972, this was the first backpacking trip for me and my wife of 27 years ( now ex.) Evelyn. We backpacked through Lassen Park and hiked up to the crater of Lassen Peak. The picture of the two of us (on the summit) still hangs on the wall of my study.
Route Climbed: Tourist Trail Date Climbed: July 1992
Took my friends Chocolate Lab to the top. The dog spent an hour sliding belly first over the snow on the way back to the car. That dog was the best climbing partner I ever had! Very beautiful mountain.
Route Climbed: The trail Date Climbed: October 13,2002
Got to the top in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. There were 7 of us including my fiance Alice Tackett. Perfect weather on top, but a bit smokey in all directions. Spent 3 hours eating lunch, drinking a bottle of 1997 Youngs Cabernet ( Amador County ), then cruised around the top and had a lovely Prager Late Harvest Reisling Ice wine and dessert. Made for a nice hike down!
Route Climbed: South Face Date Climbed: October 9, 2002
My friend and I climbed the South Face Trail. We set out around 2 pm and made it to the top in a brisk 1 hr 40 min. The views to the north were spectacular, especially Shasta. The South was a bit cloudy, but the Trinity Alps and Sierra's outlines were still visible. Beware the wind however as it can be quite strong near the top. No snow had fallen yet though so it was still summer climbing. Took us 55 minutes to come down after puttering around for an hour up top.
Route Climbed: Tourist Trail Date Climbed: Aug 10, 2002
Dayhiked with my wife and her 11-year-old daughter up visiting from sea level, Texas. We got to the summit in 1hr, 45min anyway, passing a few tourists along the way. All the smoke in the air made it impossible to see Shasta or the Sierra.

Route Climbed: Tourist Trail Date Climbed: Summer 1994I have been up Lassen twice. The desolation of the summit area is awesome. Good views as well.
August 2006: Walked up with my 3 sons Kyler (8), Riley (6), and Sawyer (6) for a quick ascent just before dark.

Date Climbed: Aug. 31, 2002Crowded trail all the way up. The fires in Oregon provided enough smoke that the view of Shasta was impossible; beautful day otherwise.
