Lost In Penitentes

Lost In Penitentes

Okay, so I wasn't exactly lost. Photographed at 19,300 feet on Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano in the world, January 7, 2011. According to Wikipedia, Penitentes "are a snow formation found at high altitudes. They take the form of tall thin blades of hardened snow or ice closely spaced with the blades oriented towards the general direction of the sun. Penitentes can be as tall as a person." Here are more penitentes near Everst base camp.

Re: nice self-portrait

Thanks Jonnie! There was no one around to help out so I just had to wing it and thankfully it turned out.

Re: careful there Gimp!

Thanks. I hope we can still go for a trip together some time soon. I just need a few weeks to rest first.

Re: careful there Gimp!

Good. You heal-up and I'll rest-up and then we'll be ready.

Be careful around them

I suppose that would not be the best place to stumble and fall....I've seen "beds of nails" but those are ice spears!

Penitentes

Penitentes generally only grow large at lower latitudes; thus Andes, Iran, Tajikistan. They grown big under very strong sunlight with good duration, reasonably cooler temps, and a lack of fresh snow....like a long dry spell at altitude in sub-30 deg latitude.

I still want to return to Chile!

Like Josh said, I wish I was there as well. The altitude being the only question mark, terrain wise very do-able. Oh well, I'm happy here as well, even without mountains. Great job Adam!! 10/10 on the picture.

Re: I still want to return to Chile!

Thanks for the comment Joel. Coincidentally I'm currently peakbagging in South America. Did a 14k peak near Quito today and will do 15er tomorrow. After a month in Ecuador, I'll continue south into Argentina, for another month there.
