Bierstadt Trail  Sucess!

Meetup.com Independence Day hike. This was my 5th time on Bierstadt. The place was a madhouse, as expected. Full parking lots and tons of hikers, but that's all right. The weather was good, a little windy at times, but sunny. There were a few slower hikers in the group, and one turned back before the summit. This was the 1st 14er of 3 in our group.

A beautiful morning.  Sucess!

Woke up around 4am and made it to Evans trailhead around 6am. Met a hiker at the lot and we decided to hike together. We hit the trail at 6:30am, made it through the swampy areas easily and over the still frozen snow due to our early start. It was slow going since this was my 2nd 14er and it was her first. We made the summit at 9:45am and got back to the car at noon before a storm rolled our way. Great day!

Postholing builds character

Soft snow over marshes made for some serious postholing even with snowshoes on. Forced to retreat 250ft from summit due to lightning...

Easy climb in interesting conditions  Sucess!

Solo adventure in every version of inclement weather- snow, hail, wind, freezing rain, large hail, thunder, and intermittent white outs. Good fun on the summit ridge and good time given the conditions. Met up with another solo guy and traded beating the path through snow. Only bad part was freezing creek crossing with weak snow banks. Dropped thigh deep, but gaiters actually kept water out of my boots.

Bierstadt Trail  Sucess!

I had planned to climb Capitol Peak this weekend, but I decided to play it safe. It was clear all day, but cold in the morning. There was a little snow on the ground, more is sure to come. Plenty of hikers on the trail, but not as crazy as a typical summer weeekend. The whole trip took about 4.5 hours, with a break of about 30 minutes on the summit. This was my 4th time on Bierstadt.

Snowy June climb  Sucess!

Climbed Bierstadt in snowy spring conditions - a great alternative to the easy summer trail and heavy traffic!

Early storms

This was my attempt at a 2nd 14,000 footer and bringing a friend for her first. We had a beautiful day despite a late start: 9:00. The trails were crowded but everyone was friendly. Conditions were great and easy footing. We were just about at the turn for the summit, 13,750 feet, when a bolt of lightening struck the summit sending everyone down. Another bold hit just to the east of us and dark clouds enveloped the mountain. I had crouched down hoping for the storm to pass but there was no indication it would and hoards of people and dogs started hurrying back down. Hail started in earnest and stung any exposed skin as well as filled the trail with ice and the nice footing was complicated as the trail turned to mud mixed with ice. Everyone encouraged each other down the mountain and emphatically shared the feeling of defeat as many of us never got to summit that day. Those who did summit as the lightening struck were shaken, hair had stood on ends for some and you could hear the electricity crackly in the cairns. Am saddened to miss the peak but thankful no one was hurt that day. Definitely a nice climb and will revisit it someday...

Fifth 14'er  Sucess!

My 2 friends and I made it to the top in 3 hours. I didn't figure this was too awfully bad since we had just flown in from Dallas 36 hours prior to climbing. It's my 5th 14'er. Very crowded on the trail and lots of dogs! Fun time.

Nice day  Sucess!

Sweet hike. I had no food(gave it to my friend) and 2 hours of sleep so I struggled. I'll have to return and hit it harder solo

"Winter" solo  Sucess!

With all the snow this spring hike should count as winter! Was able to go right up the snow to the summit. Caught in light snow (and fell IN the creek) on the descent.
